E-SESSIONS : 7 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE

30 Jun 2016            Jessica Ratty

Often when a couple get engaged and begin to plan their dream wedding day, it is totally normal for them to be in whole new territory and being confused with the planning and traditions. While most couples know what an E-session (engagement session or Pre-wedding portrait session) is, we do quite often get couples asking what they are, or why they should have one.

I absolutely adore E-sessions and the beautiful images that are captured during them! There are so many great reasons to have an E-session before your wedding day.

1) YOU GET USE TO BEING IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA

Let's be honest, most of us are not 100% comfortable with being in front of the camera, we feel awkward and unsure of what to do or worried about how we will look. For many couples they have never been photographed professionally or had to pose, so at first it can feel a little awkward or scary. But that is what your E-session is for! Most couples (especially the Grooms) feel way out of their comfort zone the first time they are in front of the camera. But we will start with some super easy and natural poses or setups and show you a little teaser so you know how amazing you look! As the shoot progresses you will begin to relax even more and by the end of it, it will all feel completely natural to you. Then on the wedding day, you don't have to be worried or nervous about having photos taken, or unsure of how to stand or how you look.

So many times we have photographed a couple who before their E-session have said "how awkward they are in front of the camera and how they are not photogenic" etc etc, then when their E-session comes around they are quite nervous and stiff at the beginning and feel really awkward, but by the end of it they are 100% more comfortable and relaxed while being photographed and the correct way to stand (which of course I will show you how to stand) comes naturally. Then on their wedding day, even if it is a few months after, they automatically remember the way to stand and it all just comes back to them and it is even more natural. It is so important to be relaxed in front of the camera, if you are nervous or tense, you will definitely see it in your images.

2) YOU GET TO KNOW YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Your photographer is going to be with you for pretty much your entire wedding day! From the morning when you are getting ready until the reception. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and you want to ensure that you feel completely comfortable and at ease with the people who are sharing it with you. Especially the person with possibly the most important job on the day (capturing all of the very precious moments and memories that happen) because how you feel around them, will definitely come across in your images. If you don't really know your photographer and they turn up on your wedding day to photograph you and you feel awkward or nervous around them, it will be very clear in your images that you weren't completely relaxed.

It also means that they can get to know you both and what you are like together. This will help them photograph you in the best possible way and really capture your relationship and love.

3) YOU CAN HAVE IT AT A LOCATION THAT IS SPECIAL TO YOU

E-sessions are totally personal and different for each couple, so you can personalise it to suit you and your style. Some couples like to choose a location where they met, or that is significant to them or their relationship.

Or another popular option is to have a themed session to suit something that you love or your style. Why not bring along cute props that add just an extra touch of sweetness to your images! Some ideas are a little picnic setup for some seriously adorable and romantic images, Old Hollywood Glamour, vintage pushbikes, really anything you can think of! If you love the water, why not do something really different and get in the water, for some extra romantic and stunning images!

4) YOU CAN REALLY TEST OUT YOUR HAIR AND MAKE-UP TRIAL

Many Brides are still not sure about how to have their hair and make-up on their wedding day and often are worried about how it will look in their photos. Make-up always needs to be done darker and slightly more dramatic when it is going to be photographed, as it will always appear lighter in camera, which makes some Brides nervous, as they aren't use to this. Why not book your hair and make-up trial on the same day as your E-session and that way you can see how it lasts throughout the day, how it looks it natural sunlight and more importantly, how it is looks on a professional camera. You will see it from all angles in your images and will definitely help you decide if it is the perfect style for the day!

5) YOU CAN USE THE IMAGES FOR SO MANY THINGS

The most popular way our clients like to use their Engagement images is to create a beautiful signature album, which is filled with their favourite E-session images with plenty of white space around them. They then have these albums at their reception for their guests not only to look at, but to sign and write their special messages and well wishes. They make the perfect moment from your wedding day and you can always look back on it, in years to come.

Or many clients like to have them printed and framed to hang on their walls in their home. Of course you will have beautiful wedding images hanging up, but it is also nice to have couples portraits on display that aren't all from the wedding day.

Another popular thing to do is have some printed and give them to parents as gifts to say thank you for their help during the wedding planning process.

Of course you can also use them for so many things for the wedding day, from Save The Dates, to wedding invitations, custom wine bottle labels or bonbonnieres.

The options really are endless.

6) CELEBRATE AND CAPTURE BEING ENGAGED

Being engaged is such an exciting and happy time and always filled with so much love! Why not celebrate this incredible chapter in your life, where you are so happy and planning not only your dream wedding day but your dream life together!

I know that planning a wedding can be a stressful and insanely busy time in your life, but why not take a few hours out from the crazy wedding planning and just let your hair down, have some fun and get loved up with your fiancé? It will add some fun to this time in your life and help you to remember what your wedding is really about - you, your fiancé and your love for each other.

On the wedding day, of course it is all about the Bride and Groom, but it is also a celebration of your entire lives coming together, so naturally it is also about all of your family and close friends. So the majority of your images from the wedding day will be with all of those very special people in your lives. An E-session is just about the two of you together.

I promise by the end of your E-session, you would have spent the time cuddling, kissing, holding hands, just being sweet and romantic with each other, that you will leave feeling all loved up and remembering exactly why you are getting married. The stress of wedding planning will all fade away.

THE GOLDEN HOUR : WHY I PREFER TO SCHEDULE OUTDOOR SESSIONS AROUND SUNSET

17 Jun 2015            Jessica Ratty

The magical Golden Hour, where the light is like gorgeous liquid gold and everything is so sweet and romantic! It’s a pretty popular time of day for photographers to shoot. We’ll tell you what it is and why we prefer this time of day to others.

Many people assume that a super sunny day is perfect for photos and the bright Sun is ideal shooting conditions... 90% of the time, this is incorrect. A photographers ideal outdoor lighting conditions is either an overcast day or shooting at sunset.. during the Golden Hour.

You may or may not have noticed that all of our open availability for outdoor portrait sessions is in the evening before sunset. We do have some daytime sessions available, but we prefer to shoot in the hours leading up to sunset. This is called the ‘Golden Hour.’ During this time, the lighting is absolutely perfect.

The Perks:

-  You get yummy light flares and beautiful soft light.
-  There are no soft shadows or squinty eyes from the blinding sun at high noon.
-  In the summer, the weather isn’t too hot, so you’re able to relax a little better knowing there isn’t sweat running down your face or making stains on your shirt.
-  During Golden Hour, everything is warm and pretty and gives off a magical feeling.
-  We can also get some sweet silhouette shots as the sun is going down on the horizon. And some more moody, romantic images as the sun disappears.

A KARRATHA E-SESSION : LEON & NATALIE

12 Jun 2015            Jessica Ratty

Leon & Natalie's E-session was probably my most favourite couple's shoot that I have ever photographed. They decided to have their session in Karratha, which has the most incredible locations and landscapes that I have ever seen! Every where I turned, there was another incredible photography spot. Not to mention how gorgeous these two are! Seriously they were so much fun to photograph, they both were 100% committed to the shoot and were so easy to work with. The more excited a couple is about their session, the better the outcome! Although their Wedding was quite a while ago now, their E-session is still my all time favourite!

Tegan & Dylan : E-session Signature Album

15 Sep 2014            Jessica Ratty

Tegan and Dylan are getting married this month at the beautiful Caversham House - a stunning venue in the Swan Valley, with so many sweet little locations all within walking distance!

We photographed their E-session a couple of months ago at my favourite location in Perth - Bells Rapids. Bells Rapids is amazing and depending on what time of year you go, the scenery can look completely different, so every time I shoot a session there, the images come out completely different. In the weeks leading up to their session, there was really heavy and constant rainfall in Perth, so the river water level was higher than it has been in many years, so it made the area completely different. Rocks that you could normally climb across, were completely submerged in water.

On the day of Tegan and Dylan's E-session, the Sun was gorgeous soft and golden, which is my favourite type of lighting to shoot in - one of the benefits of photographing in Winter!

They have decided to have a Signature Album from their E-session at their Wedding Reception, for their guests to sign and write their well wishes.

E-sessions : Before & Afters

06 Aug 2014            Jessica Ratty

Some couples when they are looking for a photographer, don't really know what to look for and how to spot the differences and different quality. It all comes down to the uniqueness of the photographers work, as well as the quality of the products that they produce and how your finished images are presented.

If you are only getting your images on disk, they will not look the same as what the photographer has on display when you print them. There are many reasons for this, first of all usually the files are either straight from the camera or edited (Which can sometimes just mean colour corrected - some people think this means that the images are fully retouched - normally that is not the case as there is so much time and work that goes into retouching images, that to provide a disk of fully retouched images would be impossible, or they would have to charge a lot to cover their time and fees.) So this is usually one huge reason why they will not look the same, but there is also the issue of the lab you use, professional photographers have their images printed at the best professional labs in Australia, which are colour calibrated to their computers, to ensure the printing and colours are perfect. Also when you use a one hour lab, they are not using quality printers, paper or ink, they are also printed usually by an unqualified casual worker who just presses print. So they are not colour managed or quality controlled. The difference between a photograph that a good quality professional photographer can present to you as the finished product and an image that you get printed off a disk, is honestly a huge difference.

I have given a few examples below of what an image looks like when it comes out of the camera and then the piece of art it is turned into, once it has been fully retouched.

Each image is treated differently and retouched differently, depending on the image. In all images the couples skin is always softened and airbrushed, blemishes are removed, we make their features stand out and ensure that the landscape around them looks incredible and the detail is really showcased and the image has a punch of colour and just pops!

Troy & Amanda : Karratha E-session Signature Album

24 Apr 2014            Jessica Ratty

At the end of last year, I flew up to my favourite location in Western Australia to shoot - Karratha, for Amanda & Frank's E-session! I have photographed quite a few E-sessions up there now and every time I go up, we always find new and even more amazing locations. On this day though, it was seriously hot and the sun was scorching and bright, so we did have to take quite a few breaks to escape the heat and also for poor Amanda & Frank to rest their eyes from the bright sun!

I am photographing Amanda & Frank's wedding at Caversham House in only a couple of weeks time. They have decided to have a signature album at their reception, for all of their guests to sign and give their well wishes and love.

Anthony & Andrea : E-session Bells Rapids

13 Mar 2014            Jessica Ratty

Last weekend I photographed Andrea and Anthony's amazing wedding day. The day was perfect, they went to so much effort to think of the smallest details. They are such a fun couple to be around and to work with, it was definitely one of my favourite weddings!

Andrea and Anthony had their E-session at one of my favourite locations - Bells Rapids. Usually there is a beautiful river flowing through the middle, but it had all dried up over Summer. But it was still amazing for photos as there is just so much around!
