E-SESSIONS : 7 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE

30 Jun 2016            Jessica Ratty

Often when a couple get engaged and begin to plan their dream wedding day, it is totally normal for them to be in whole new territory and being confused with the planning and traditions. While most couples know what an E-session (engagement session or Pre-wedding portrait session) is, we do quite often get couples asking what they are, or why they should have one.

I absolutely adore E-sessions and the beautiful images that are captured during them! There are so many great reasons to have an E-session before your wedding day.

1) YOU GET USE TO BEING IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA

Let's be honest, most of us are not 100% comfortable with being in front of the camera, we feel awkward and unsure of what to do or worried about how we will look. For many couples they have never been photographed professionally or had to pose, so at first it can feel a little awkward or scary. But that is what your E-session is for! Most couples (especially the Grooms) feel way out of their comfort zone the first time they are in front of the camera. But we will start with some super easy and natural poses or setups and show you a little teaser so you know how amazing you look! As the shoot progresses you will begin to relax even more and by the end of it, it will all feel completely natural to you. Then on the wedding day, you don't have to be worried or nervous about having photos taken, or unsure of how to stand or how you look.

So many times we have photographed a couple who before their E-session have said "how awkward they are in front of the camera and how they are not photogenic" etc etc, then when their E-session comes around they are quite nervous and stiff at the beginning and feel really awkward, but by the end of it they are 100% more comfortable and relaxed while being photographed and the correct way to stand (which of course I will show you how to stand) comes naturally. Then on their wedding day, even if it is a few months after, they automatically remember the way to stand and it all just comes back to them and it is even more natural. It is so important to be relaxed in front of the camera, if you are nervous or tense, you will definitely see it in your images.

2) YOU GET TO KNOW YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Your photographer is going to be with you for pretty much your entire wedding day! From the morning when you are getting ready until the reception. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and you want to ensure that you feel completely comfortable and at ease with the people who are sharing it with you. Especially the person with possibly the most important job on the day (capturing all of the very precious moments and memories that happen) because how you feel around them, will definitely come across in your images. If you don't really know your photographer and they turn up on your wedding day to photograph you and you feel awkward or nervous around them, it will be very clear in your images that you weren't completely relaxed.

It also means that they can get to know you both and what you are like together. This will help them photograph you in the best possible way and really capture your relationship and love.

3) YOU CAN HAVE IT AT A LOCATION THAT IS SPECIAL TO YOU

E-sessions are totally personal and different for each couple, so you can personalise it to suit you and your style. Some couples like to choose a location where they met, or that is significant to them or their relationship.

Or another popular option is to have a themed session to suit something that you love or your style. Why not bring along cute props that add just an extra touch of sweetness to your images! Some ideas are a little picnic setup for some seriously adorable and romantic images, Old Hollywood Glamour, vintage pushbikes, really anything you can think of! If you love the water, why not do something really different and get in the water, for some extra romantic and stunning images!

4) YOU CAN REALLY TEST OUT YOUR HAIR AND MAKE-UP TRIAL

Many Brides are still not sure about how to have their hair and make-up on their wedding day and often are worried about how it will look in their photos. Make-up always needs to be done darker and slightly more dramatic when it is going to be photographed, as it will always appear lighter in camera, which makes some Brides nervous, as they aren't use to this. Why not book your hair and make-up trial on the same day as your E-session and that way you can see how it lasts throughout the day, how it looks it natural sunlight and more importantly, how it is looks on a professional camera. You will see it from all angles in your images and will definitely help you decide if it is the perfect style for the day!

5) YOU CAN USE THE IMAGES FOR SO MANY THINGS

The most popular way our clients like to use their Engagement images is to create a beautiful signature album, which is filled with their favourite E-session images with plenty of white space around them. They then have these albums at their reception for their guests not only to look at, but to sign and write their special messages and well wishes. They make the perfect moment from your wedding day and you can always look back on it, in years to come.

Or many clients like to have them printed and framed to hang on their walls in their home. Of course you will have beautiful wedding images hanging up, but it is also nice to have couples portraits on display that aren't all from the wedding day.

Another popular thing to do is have some printed and give them to parents as gifts to say thank you for their help during the wedding planning process.

Of course you can also use them for so many things for the wedding day, from Save The Dates, to wedding invitations, custom wine bottle labels or bonbonnieres.

The options really are endless.

6) CELEBRATE AND CAPTURE BEING ENGAGED

Being engaged is such an exciting and happy time and always filled with so much love! Why not celebrate this incredible chapter in your life, where you are so happy and planning not only your dream wedding day but your dream life together!

I know that planning a wedding can be a stressful and insanely busy time in your life, but why not take a few hours out from the crazy wedding planning and just let your hair down, have some fun and get loved up with your fiancé? It will add some fun to this time in your life and help you to remember what your wedding is really about - you, your fiancé and your love for each other.

On the wedding day, of course it is all about the Bride and Groom, but it is also a celebration of your entire lives coming together, so naturally it is also about all of your family and close friends. So the majority of your images from the wedding day will be with all of those very special people in your lives. An E-session is just about the two of you together.

I promise by the end of your E-session, you would have spent the time cuddling, kissing, holding hands, just being sweet and romantic with each other, that you will leave feeling all loved up and remembering exactly why you are getting married. The stress of wedding planning will all fade away.

LUKE & STEPHANIE : WEDDING ALBUM DESIGN

18 Nov 2015            Jessica Ratty

My favourite part of photographing any wedding or even a portrait session, is the very end product - the stunning custom made album! It is the only way to showcase your images in the best way possible and which will make them shine.

This is the Wedding Album of the beautiful Stephanie & Luke, from their Wedding Day, earlier on this year.

Every image in our albums (whether it be a wedding album or portrait album) are fully retouched and edited.

ROSI & RYAN : WEDDING SNEAK PEEK

06 Nov 2015            Jessica Ratty

Rosi & Ryan's wedding day was such an incredibly beautiful day, which I absolutely loved photographing. For both of them, it was their second marriage, so they decided to opt for a very intimate and small ceremony in their gorgeous home. Only their immediate family and closest friends were invited to share this very special day with them.

Rosi wore a stunning blush pink gown and Ryan wore a grey Hugo Boss suit. Their priority was to be able to have some very romantic and intimate photographs of the two of them together, from the day. So after the ceremony, we created some beautiful and intimate images in their home, before heading down to the foreshore and then on to the Crown Casino.

Their wedding day was so beautiful and they were such a wonderful couple to photograph!

WEDDING DAY TIP : WEDDING GOWNS WITH BUTTONS

02 Nov 2015            Jessica Ratty

After years of photographing so many beautiful weddings, you definitely pick up a long list of tips and tricks to pass on to future Brides. One of those little tricks that I want to share with you is about Wedding Gowns that have a button up backs.

While that perfect row of buttons, that run down the Brides back looks absolutely incredible and simply stunning, those beautiful and tiny little babies can just cause so much grief and frustration on the morning of a wedding day! Once you add that small little elastic loop, that has to be pulled over that slightly larger slippery button, then add the wedding day excitement and nervousness, time restraints and fake nails, then multiply it by the entire row of buttons... it can become a very time consuming process.

But the solution is so simple and eliminates all of the frustration and stress but also cuts the time by 80%.

The answer?  TWEEZERS! Or even a crochet hook! It really is that simple. You then just need to grab the elastic loop with your tweezers or crochet hook and pull it straight over the button. You actually won't believe how much easier and faster it makes it!

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT : PARENT REPLICA ALBUMS

12 Aug 2015            Jessica Ratty

These beautiful little albums are an exact replica of a Bride & Groom's large Heirloom Wedding Album, but in a miniature size. They are very popular with our Brides and Grooms, they make a great gift for the couples parents after the wedding, to say thank you for their help and support throughout the wedding planning process. Some Brides also love them just to keep for themselves, so they have a small copy of their album, that they can take around in their bag with them to show their friends and family.

They can be personalised with any cover, just like the larger Heirloom Album.

ALL ABOUT THE BOYS : THE GROOM & THE GROOMSMEN

10 Aug 2015            Jessica Ratty

As we all know, a Wedding Day is usually all about the Bride (and of course she deserves it! Don't get me wrong) but it is always a bonus when the Groom and his Groomsmen can have the spotlight for a few moments and we create some amazing and really cool shots for the boys too. Most Grooms and Groomsmen dread photographs on the day and worry about having really corny or cliche photos, where they are awkwardly posed. But when we create something really unique and that suits their interests, their entire attitude to their photos change and they get really excited about them and tell people about their image throughout the Wedding Day. I absolutely love these sorts of shots and they become even better when the boys are really into making the shot perfect.

Anthony's Dad had the perfect pool room set up, so how could I pass up doing something like this? So I set up the shot with Anthony, his two brothers (who were also his groomsmen) and his Dad. They all absolutely loved this image and couldn't stop talking about it. Anthony's Dad now has this image as a huge framed print, up on the wall in that very same pool room!

I seriously love photographing the boys with cigars, they usually all get really excited that they actually get to have a cigar and then even more excited when they see the finished image of what we created.

Another way to incorporate the Groom and his interests into your wedding photographs is by choosing locations that represent your Groom or his interests. Some ideas are the Beach if he likes fishing or surfing, a Golf Course if loves to play golf, a really cool Bar if he wants somewhere more laid back and funky, or even somewhere that has boats or yachts if he likes boating. Pauline and Matt both love the beach and boats, so they had their reception at the Fremantle Maritime Museum, so we could go in and create some really unique images with the yachts around them.

Dave and Danielle are obsessed with the beach and were married in Esperance, so on the morning of their wedding day, I met Dave down at the beach where he was having a quick fish and captured some really different images of him on the rocks fishing.

AN ESPERANCE WEDDING : DAVE & DANI'S WEDDING ALBUM

27 Jul 2015            Jessica Ratty

The gorgeous Dani & Dave were married in Esperance. It was such an incredible location with so many beautiful beaches and places to shoot. Last week they picked up their stunning Wedding Album to take to its forever home! They decided to go with a classic and timeless black genuine leather cover with their names and wedding date embossed in black. They loved it so much, that Dani was even in tears as she looked through it.. which is the best reaction I can get!
